Medical  Massage Las Vegas

Massage is more than just relaxation for some people.

The word massage is generally linked to relaxation, to the image of a woman in a spa, but that’s only one kind of massage. There is also the medical massage, an ancient technique that has recently become part of mainstream medical practice.

After a traumatic injury, for example a broken arm, can cause someone to overuse one side of their body and muscles and soft tissue on the other side grow stiff and atrophy. Medical massage helps restore function to dysfunctional areas that have atrophied or been bent out of shape.

Unlike a normal massage, medical massages are not for relieving stress or tension in the body, although it does reduce pain in the affected areas. It’s to rehabilitate the muscles that have languished from injury or those that are out of shape after recovering from a medical procedure like surgery. The purpose is to restore movement and function to the soft-tissue areas of the body. This is a gradual process, like physical therapy. Moving too fast could cause further damage to the affected areas. Individual sessions last from 45 to 60 minutes.

Also unlike normal massages, medical massages are not for everyone. They should be recommended by your doctor after a traumatic injury or surgery. This is in order to prevent any additional injury to the affected area and not to aggravate an unaffected area. A medical therapist determines the needs of each patient and determines their treatment regimen.

There are several different techniques that a medical therapist can use to treat someone. Manual lymph drainage is used to drain excess fluid from the body and improve the immune, or lymphatic, system. It’s a very gentle massage generally used to treat lymphedema, where lymph nodes in the outer extremities of the body are blocked. Neuromuscular therapy is varied technique often used to treat back spasms. This can begin a bit painful, but in the way the pulling a splinter out of your hand is painful. It’s quick and when it’s over, you feel a million times better. Your therapist will always check to make sure your pain level is under control. There is also the connective tissue massage, neuro-fascial massage, various osteopathic manual therapies, ancient oriental techniques, reflex and trigger point along with therapies that use stretching and positional release. Your medical therapist will determine which one is right for you. They may also give you some exercises to do at home, in much the same way as a physical therapist would.

The benefits are numerous. Even though the purpose of a medical massage is not to relieve stress, it often does, as well as relieving much of the pain associated with an injury or medical procedure. Some techniques improve blood circulation, like neuromuscular therapy. Injuries often make a person feel lethargic like they can’t do anything. A medical massage can increase energy and make you feel more up to everyday tasks. Massages have always been associated with a sense of calm, but they can also improve digestion. Medical massages can do you a world of good.
